παρέα, a group of friends.
The name
In Greek, a parea (παρέα) is a group of friends, the people you spend your time with.
Between 18 and 26, a young adult with a disability changes doctors, loses school services, and has to renew benefits and coverage, often all at once. Parea is a care team that handles that follow-up, so it doesn't all fall on one family member.
Who started it
Parea was founded by Antigone Antonakakis, Jack Carney and Brad Thompson.
Where we are
We're starting in New Jersey with young adults leaving pediatric care, first those with sickle cell disease and neuromuscular conditions like muscular dystrophy and SMA, and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the agencies that already support them. Members come to us through NJ FamilyCare health plans, Support Coordination agencies and children's hospitals, or join directly. The plan is to grow state by state from there.
